88 days a slave

If you don’t look into it, you wouldn’t know that all of us backpackers to Australia have to complete a life challenge to be entitled to a second year visa. When I say life challenge, I really mean a challenge! Like the hardest thing you would ever have to do.

Not only is it hard work but it is just an experience in its self. We have to complete 88 days of agriculture work. Doesn’t sound like a lot right? Trust me it is, although so rewarding once it is completed!

Unless this is your lifestyle, this really is a shock to the system! I worked doing orange picking, along with a group of random other jobs chucked in as well! Again, I can hear you thinking “orange picking can’t be that hard” well let me tell you now, it honestly is.

Firstly, I completed this during the winter months in a place called Loxton, which FYI is in the middle of nowhere. Next, it is shit money! But that isn’t the worst of it, because even if it is shit money, you’re in the middle of nowhere so can’t spend it anyway! And then it was cold, backbreaking and exhausting! I think there is a theme to my writing though… the people are amazing. They make it so much easier! I was so lucky to have met such a great group of people whilst completing my farm work I wouldn’t have been able to do it without them! And that is more important than you imagine because you are working and living with these people 24 hours a day! Maybe you get a break from them when you go to the toilet?

So anyway, farm work. There is a few things you have to think about…

1. Are you mentally ready? Because it really takes its toll! We would sometimes work 2 weeks in a row then get 1 day off! Routine is good though and just think, you get your days done quicker!

2. Do you know where you are going? You hear horror stories and to be honest, chances are, you are going to get treated like shit! I’m not saying this is okay at all, but don’t forget this is these people’s livelihood and if you do a bad job it will affect them! (Also most people in this line of work are grumpy old men) AND just count it as day… this isn’t your life career choice so as long as you’re getting your days ticked off it’s good!

3. Do you have the correct clothing? No point rocking up on a farm with your Levi jeans and new Nike trainers because they will get trashed, I promise! (RIP to my nice trainers)

4. Do you know what your letting yourself in for? Because I sure as hell didn’t! I would not have been able to do my work if it wasn’t for the incredible people I had around me!! Be prepared for a shock to the system when you’re sharing a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom!

5. Make sure you still have something to look forward to! This helps so much! Farm work is hard! And if you are working day after day.. a party with your friends on a Friday makes the week go by so much quicker! My friend and I also made a little calendar and treated ourselves to something every 11 days! This could be anything from booking tickets to an event when we finished to just buying a nice bottle of wine rather than drinking goon! You Aussie travellers will know how much of a treat this is especially if you are poor!
So there we have it… 88 days a slave complete and I have now been released from my prison sentence and am back in the real world… a tiny bit overwhelmed but I made it! Let me know if you have any more questions about my time because this really is not even touching the sides!

Baby Victoria Sponge

Okay so I’m making this a theme with miniature baked goods it seems and this week I made mini Victoria sponge cakes and they are DELICIOUS.

Ingredients:
100g Caster Sugar
100g Self raising flour
100g Butter
2 eggs
140g Icing Sugar
70g Butter
Jam of your fancy
4 strawberries

To start mix the 100g sugar 100g butter and self raising flour together in a bowl. Then mix the eggs into the mixture and beat together until it forms a light golden colour smooth mixture. This can be done with a wooden spoon or I find it easier with an electric mixer. Once this is completely done place into cake cakes and into the oven for 20 minutes at 180 degrees.

Once these are cooked, remove the cakes from the oven and leave to cool, then when they have cooled remove them from the cases and cut in half as evenly as possible.

You can then make the butter icing, so for this mix the 70g butter and 140g sugar together until smooth. Place into a piping bag and then on one side of the cake pipe the icing into the centre, on the other side of the cake  spread jam onto this then you can place the top back onto the cake. Then on the top of the cake pipe a small amount of icing and then cut the strawberries into small pieces and place on top. To finish off sprinkle a small amount of icing sugar to make the cakes look like they are snow covered.

You can now eat as many as you fancy and enjoy! I hope you like this recipe and leave your comments below!

Take me to Nars

Nars, Nars, Nars what have you done to me? Or should I say to my bank? This premium brand make up has quite quickly become one of my favourites meaning I need EVERYTHING right this second. Taking the plunge and purchasing my first Nars product was a massive step forward for me as I am one of those people that just stick to what they know so this was so exciting for me!

IMG_3176I thought why not go for a bit of everything right? So my first product was the Nars Luminate foundation in the shade ‘Fiji’. This shade is perfect for my skin and I really love this foundation. Having used Mac for years now I thought it was my time to find something different. This provides a medium to full coverage and applies to the skin evenly. MUST REMEMBER TO SHAKE or this product does seperate and can come out quite oily but then applies quite matte? Weird right?

I then purchased the Nars Radiant creamy concealer in the shade Chantilly . This is the lightest shade they do in this as I feel that a lighter colour is way better n concealer than a dark especially under the eyes (where I need it most). This product have a great coverage and is so long lasting! This is compact so east to carry in your bag if needing a quick top up during the day!

I have then gone for the Nars Eyeshadow palette Inoubliable Coup d’Oeil as a girl can never have enough eyeshadows. This palette is £28 which is a little bit pricey but then it is Nars what do we expect? I actually think this is okay in price considering the amount for some other palettes and the quality of these colours are amazing. Each colour is true to its look and it is so pigmented these will last for ages and with six colours to choose from what more could I want?!

IMG_3179Next I have purchased the Nars Mascara. Now this product has a big question mark around it for me as you don’t really see or hear of people going to Nars for their mascara but I thought why not give it as go as I am trying everything else right? So this is the Audacious Mascara in Black. This is the only Mascara Nars do and to be honest I can see why. It is not my favourite product. It is good the packaging is nice and I love the matte case but it really isn’t doing my eyelashes too many favours although it does make them look very full and not like short spiders legs which is a bonus.

IMG_3181Last but not least, the Nars Velvet Matte lip pencil. This is in the shade ‘Pop life’ and it really does what it says. It is easy to apply  and doesn’t smudge. It is a lovely colour and it really is matte because lets be honest some of these things state they are matte and they really aren’t and its just a kick in the teeth really, or smudge on the teeth, whatever. This is good. I would recommend.

I hope you like this post, do you have any Nars products you would recommend?
