Who would have known that actually getting a red velvet cake to go red would be so hard and I found out in this recipe.

Ingredients
250g Plain flour
2 tbsp Cocoa powder
2 tsp Baking powder
1/2 tsp Bicarbonate soda
2 tbsp Red food colouring
175ml Buttermilk
200g Caster sugar
2 Eggs
100g Unsalter butter (soft)

Firstly mix the dry ingredients together so that being the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda. Then in a second bowl, mix together the butter and sugar until it is smooth. Then add in the food colouring so that it turned bright red. Yes this looks scary but it is fine.

I then break one egg into the wet mixture and add a third of the dry mix into the bowl until it is all stirred together. Repeat this again adding another egg and another third then finally the last third until the mix is all together. I then spoon the mixture into cake cases and place into the oven at 170 degrees for 20 minutes.

This is the point where the cakes don’t go red. From looking into the recipe after I think that it might be better to get the red from using a colouring paste rather than the liquid colouring so if you have any paste colouring you could try that. I then continue to make a butter icing and then for a final touch I place some love hearts on the top and they are ready to eat!
